As the prolonged recession takes hold it seems that interest in working in the independent sector remains strong as page views for the ISC Job Zone consistently showing around 100,000 views a month.

ISC’s Job Zone is open to all types of jobseekers from Newly Qualified Teachers; teachers from state schools; to experienced individuals looking to change profession.

The number of jobseekers visiting the ISC Job Zone is expected to remain strong thanks to ISC affiliated schools adding new jobs frequently. The service is free for all jobseekers and is updated on a daily basis. Jobseekers are encouraged to keep checking back regularly to find their ideal job.

The Easter holidays is the key time to search and apply as school staff usually have to give a term’s notice; applying now will help secure a position in the new school year. A range of teaching and non-teaching jobs are posted by ISC affiliated schools onto the Job Zone; you can specify your job search to find a suitable role that matches your search criteria.

Job ZoneÂ
The Independent Schools Council currently represents 1,260 independent schools, educating more than 510,000 children. The Job Zone is an increasingly popular source for registered ISC schools to advertise their teaching and non-teaching jobs; with around 30,000 page views a month, the Job Zone is well received by both jobseekers and schools alike.

Unlike sources such as the Times Education Supplement and The Guardians’ job site, the Job Zone only displays vacancies in ISC schools; saving you valuable time in your job search. It is a completely free service, and allows those who are interested in working in independent schools to find all types of teaching and non-teaching vacancies in the independent sector.

Why use Job Zone?
Once you have clicked into the Job Zone from www.isc.co.uk, you can instantly refine your school job search by selecting from various options. You can use this to specify the type of work you are looking for, and also by English county, or by Scotland (details for which can be found on the SCIS website www.scis.org.uk/jobs), Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. These extensive search options will form an efficient platform for you to find the right post at the right schools. As well as detailed school information such as subjects taught, pupil numbers, and school facilities, Job Zone also allows you to view the school’s latest Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection reports to help you form a better judgement of the school(s).

As ISC schools are responsible for the vacancy details that appear on the Job Zone, both the job and school information will be accurate and appropriate. Job postings on the Job Zone are frequently refreshed meaning you are seeing only up-to-date information.

How do I apply for a job on Job Zone?
You can start looking for independent school jobs by logging onto www.isc.co.uk, and clicking on ‘Job Zone’. When you have refined your job search, simply follow the application process as detailed on the vacancy advertisement. This process may vary slightly between vacancies and different schools, so it is important to read the details carefully prior to application.

If you are a teacher in training, or interested in working in an independent school, then Teacher Taster Days will offer a valuable insight to what it’s like teaching in the independent sector.

What are Teacher Taster Days?

Designed for undergraduates or postgraduates who are interested in teaching; teachers in the state sector who would like to find out more about teaching in independent schools; or if you are simply looking for a career change – these sessions will give you the practical opportunity to have a taster of what it’s like to work in an independent school. Independent schools can use these days to promote teaching in the independent sector, in their schools, and also allow them to meet their potential employees.

What happens on a Teacher Taster Day?These taster days may vary between schools. Most will be half a day to a full day but others may be significantly longer. A majority of independent schools use their Teacher Taster Days to allow potential teachers to observe lessons, meet key staff and participate in school tours. Aside from the core curriculum subjects like Maths, Science, and English – the creative and performing arts also have a strong place in independent schools in order to provide an all-round education for pupils. For that reason, some independent schools may offer an insight to their extra-curricular activities during their Teacher Taster Days and this may also be a good opportunity for you to show any extra-curricular skills you may have that will be beneficial to the school.

At the end of the Teacher Taster Day, you will leave feeling better informed of what it’s like to teach in an independent school. Do remember that you are only seeing one school; and to get a better picture of the sector you could even arrange visits to other schools.

How can I find independent schools that offer Teacher Taster Days?

Simply go to the ISC Teaching Zone, where you will be able to search for independent schools by county who currently offer Teacher Taster Days. ISC currently have schools in over 34 counties offering Teacher Taster Days, all of which can be found through the ISC website. Here, you will be able to obtain further information about the respective Teacher Taster Days, as well as contact information to help you arrange your teacher taster day.

If you are an ISC member school you can add details of job vacancies at your school free of charge to the ISC website. All types of job vacancies can be added such as Head jobs, Bursars, teaching jobs, prep teacher jobs and support.

Job vacancies appear in the Job Zone. To add your vacancies you need to post them using the Member Zone. Once a vacancy has been added you can log back in and edit it at any time.

Adding your vacancies

Step 1 -Â Log in to the ISC Member Zone
ISC schools can add details of all their job vacancies through the Member Zone on the ISC website. All individuals wishing to access the Member Zone first need to register.

- To do this, simply go to the Member Zone and complete the form under the heading ‘New User’ and then click on the ‘Register Now’ button at the end. You will then be emailed your personal login

- To log in, return to the Member Zone and complete the login fields with your email and password. Forgetting them needn’t be a worry – just click on ‘Forgotten password? Click here’ and you will be emailed a reminder. You also have the option of ticking a ‘Remember me’ box when logging in so that you don’t need to type you email and password next time you visit.

- To change your password click the yellow ‘Change Login’ button in the left hand navigation when logged

Step 2 – Add your jobs to the Job Administration section of the Member Zone
When logged into the Member Zone you can add details of all the job vacancies at your school. Select ‘Job Administration’ in the left hand navigation and then ‘Add New Job.’ Once you have completed all the fields click on the submit button and your job will appear immediately in the Job Zone, which is accessible by all.

If you would prefer the job not to appear, simply tick ‘Hide Job?’ It will then remain hidden until you deselect hide.

When adding a job you must specify the date on which you wish the job to go live; selecting the date of the day on which you are adding the job vacancy, will enable the details to go live immediately. The Job Administration area only allows you to see and edit job vacancies at your school.

Step 3 – Edit your job vacancies
Once you have added a job you can edit it at any time by clicking on ‘Edit Live Jobs’. When you add a job you select the date on which the advert should be removed from the Job Zone, after which date the job moves from ‘Edit Live Jobs’ to ‘List/Repost Expired Jobs’ in the Member Zone’s Job Administration area. This means that you can re-post a job at a later date if necessary, without having to complete all of the details again.

Once you have added your job vacancies they will appear in the Job Zone.

Who do I ask if I need help?
If you have any questions relating to the Member Zone, adding jobs or open days, email website@isc.co.uk
