I love my job at ISC as it is the perfect combination between routine and variety. Each morning I can be found at my desk bright and early with my head buried in a huge pile of newspapers, scouring the coverage for education stories. However, after lunch I could be working on a whole host of projects, often related to what I have found in the newspapers on that specific day.

The purpose of the Daily News Summary (DNS) is to succinctly summarise the day’s education news, e-mailing out a daily digest of coverage to subscribers as early in the day as possible, along with links to the online articles, where available. This saves education employees having to trawl through the newspapers and the internet themselves for the latest school and university-related developments. Whenever I tell people what I do for my job, the usual reaction is along the lines of ‘wow, I wish I got paid to read the newspapers!’ However, the truth is, I don’t have time to actually read the newspapers. Instead, I have developed a knack for scanning each page and looking out for key education-related words – such as ‘boarding school’, ‘prep school’, ‘homework’, ‘charitable status’ ‘bursaries’ and ‘scholarships’ – that have been programmed into my brain since I began working at ISC. One downside of this is that whenever I read the Metro on the tube, or any newspaper or magazine in my spare time, my brain automatically kicks into DNS mode and I manically start flicking through the publication as if there were no tomorrow!

Once I have gathered my cuttings from the day’s papers, I set about typing each story up and trawling the internet for the relevant links. Thanks to free resources such as Google Alerts and Journalisted I often find links to most of the day’s stories waiting in my inbox each morning. However, experience has taught me that relying on electronic coverage is not comprehensive enough, and the hard copies of the newspapers often feature articles, or different versions of stories, which are not available online.

There are currently over 2,200 subscribers to the DNS, a number which has nearly doubled since I joined ISC in the summer of 2007. Although the content of the DNS is tailored specifically for ISC member schools, it is free for absolutely anyone to subscribe As well as being updated each day, the DNS section of the ISC website acts as a useful education news archive, which can be searched. This is an extremely useful resource for anyone working in the education sector. For example, type in ‘academies’ or ‘academy’ into the keyword search facility, and you will find a comprehensive list of all academy-related news coverage since 2006.

Now that I have been at ISC for over a year, and have therefore devoured more than an entire 12-month cycle of education news, I am beginning to recognise patterns in education news coverage. Organisations, including ISC, tend to release their research at similar times each year. This knowledge of the education news agenda is vital for the ISC press office as we can often predict when a story is coming up, and decide in advance whether the independent education sector should get involved in the debate. It also means we can decide the best times to release ISC research and news so we don’t clash with another big education announcement.

Feedback for the DNS is always appreciated, and you are welcome to e-mail your comments and suggestions to Hayley.Dunlop@isc.co.uk

ISCias is a FREE information and advice service for parents giving general information about accredited independent schools. ISCias deals with around 800 queries each month and that figure continues to grow!

My role as ISCias Information officer is to answer queries from parents and schools on the 0845 SCHOOLS (7246657) number as well as respond to email enquiries from information@isc.co.uk. Anyone can call or email ISCias about Independent Schools, boarding schools, preparatory schools as well as to gather information regarding scholarships and bursaries.

The ISC website, particularly the Parents Zone section, is a great resource that all parents are encouraged to access – why not have a look yourself!

As well as a vast amount of written material from prep schools to special educational needs it is also home to the ‘Find an ISC school’ search facility. Parents can use this to find appropriate accredited ISC schools that meet their requirements. Each school has a unique page with a link to their school inspection report, contact details as well as subjects taught, activities, facilities and much more. There is plenty of information to help a parent as they start to look for schools for their child. The advanced personalised school search is very popular

Whether you need information about preparatory schools or schools catering for pupils who are slightly older, perhaps schools with sixth forms, ISCias can help by giving you a list for you to consider. There are currently over 66,000 boarders in ISC schools and ISCias are happy to provide advice about boarding schools as well as day schools.

So whether you need general information about ISC schools, Common Entrance Exams, Scholarships or a list of specific independent schools that meet your needs then don’t hesitate to give us a call on 0845 SCHOOLS (7246657) or send an email to information@isc.co.uk - it’s FREE and impartial.
